Stick Bug Sex

I was lucky in having gorgeous fall weather for ecology lab today, lucky that one of my students noticed this pair, and lucky that they were still going strong half an hour later when I returned with the camera.

The insects, of course, are getting very lucky.
The lighting was the only unfortunate part of the whole incident, and I feel prurient enough with this quality of images; imagine if you could see any better where he is sticking that stick.

That's pretty awesome. Speaking of luck, did you get the little pouch of luck from Japan that I sent you? I was a little worried about how much postage to put on that...

My eyes just aren't good enough so, please tell me, just what are they doing?

Anon (Mom?): click on the photo on the right and it will make it bigger, so you should be able to distinguish two sticks, one over the other. The over one is the male, and at the bottom of the image you can see where his abdomen curls around under and into the female. So they weren't "doing" much, but it's likely we'll have more stick insects next year.
